History of Physiology Department

The Department of Physiology was established in 1966 by the first Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Stang Mongkolsuk, the Rockefeller Foundation representative, Dr. James S. Dinning and Dr. David E. Shafer, the first Chairman of the Department. It was initially staffed by visiting physiologists, namely, Dr. Gordon J. Leitch (1967-1972), Dr. Nona Emery (1968-1970), Dr. Walter S. Root (1968), and Dr. Richard M. Smith (1969-1971). The succeeding Heads were Dr. Walter S. Root (1968), Dr. Ward W. Moore (1968-1971) and Dr. Russell Huggins (1971-1973). All visiting scientists left by early 1974 and Dr. Liangchai Limlomwongse took up the position as the first Thai Head of the Department. Previous Chairmen include Dr. Thirayudh Glinsukon (1981-1988), Dr. Chumpol Pholpramool (1988-1992, 1996-2000), Dr. Samaisukh Sophasan (1992-1996), Dr. Chaivat Toskulkao (2000-2002), Assoc. Prof. Pipat Cherdrungsi (2003-2007), Prof. Dr. Pawinee Piyachaturawat (2007-2012), Prof. Dr. Jonggonnee Wattanapermpool (2012-2015). The present Chairman is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vitoon Saengsirisuwan.
